What does Claude for finance look like when it is governed?
Claude for finance works when each use case names four things: the input Claude may read, the control on what it can do, the evidence it must leave behind, and the person who approves the output. Claude drafts and a named accountant decides. Without that record, a finance team gets fast text with no account of where the numbers came from, which no controller accepts.
Anthropic's Claude for Financial Services, announced in July 2025, adds pre-built connectors to market data providers and platforms such as Snowflake and Databricks, and Anthropic states that inputs and outputs from its commercial products are not used to train its models by default. The control framing here follows the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and its Govern, Map, Measure and Manage functions.
Which AI financial reporting tasks should a finance team start with?
Start with variance commentary and board-pack first drafts, because both begin from approved numbers and end with a human edit. Input: the locked period's trial balance and flux report, exported after sign-off, never the live ledger. Control: Claude reads only that extract plus last period's commentary for tone. Evidence: the draft, the figures it cites and the extract version. Approver: the controller for commentary, the FP&A lead for the board pack.
A good variance draft names the account, amount, direction and driver, for example freight expense up 14 percent against budget because a carrier rate change took effect in month two. Claude may propose the driver only when the supporting detail, such as a vendor-level breakdown, is in the input. Otherwise the draft should mark the driver unconfirmed, so the reviewer knows what to check rather than what to trust.

How should Claude triage reconciliation and AP exceptions?
Claude should classify exceptions; a person should clear them. For reconciliations the input is the unmatched item list with dates, amounts and counterparties. The control is that Claude proposes a category such as timing difference, duplicate or missing accrual and cannot post an adjustment or mark anything reconciled. The evidence is the category plus the rule or document it relied on. The preparer accepts or rejects each proposal; the reviewer signs as before.
AP exception review has the same shape. Input: invoices that failed three-way match, exceeded tolerance or look like duplicates, with the matching purchase order and receipt. Control: read access to those records only, with no ability to approve, hold or release an invoice. Evidence: one note per invoice stating the mismatch, the likely cause and the question for the buyer or vendor. Approver: the AP supervisor, with existing approval limits unchanged.
Can Claude answer policy questions and summarize audit evidence?
Yes, if the document set is controlled and every answer cites the passage it used. Policy questions, such as the software capitalization threshold, are a strong early use because the source is internal, versioned and owned. Here the input is the current approved policy library, retrieval is limited to that library with the version date shown, and the evidence is the quoted passage and document name. The policy owner samples answers monthly and corrects the library, not the model.
Audit evidence summarization helps most during fieldwork, when the team is working through a long request list. Give Claude the support for one sample, such as the invoice, receipt, approval record and payment for a selected expense, and ask for a summary listing each document, its date and the control it demonstrates. The auditor still inspects the originals. The summary is attached to them, never offered in their place.
How does Claude reach NetSuite, Oracle Fusion or Salesforce data?
Only through a connector or an MCP server that your administrators enable and permission; the model holds no standing access to your ERP or CRM. NetSuite documents its AI Connector Service: it uses the Model Context Protocol, ships an MCP Standard Tools SuiteApp, lists required features and permissions, covers concurrency governance and, Oracle notes, has not been assessed for HIPAA. Those details matter because the connector, not the model, decides which records a user can read.
Finance teams want one more layer: certified metric definitions and row-level policies that apply the same way from Claude or a dashboard. Nexatron, dotSolved's data intelligence platform, adds that layer: governed query tools that Claude or any other MCP client can call over live connectors to NetSuite, Oracle Fusion, Salesforce and SAP S/4HANA. Each answer returns with the query that produced it, the metric's certified definition and the row-level policy that filtered the rows, meeting the evidence requirement automatically.
What stays out of scope, and how does a CFO pilot the rest?
Posting journals, releasing payments and changing master data stay out of scope until the read-only uses have run through one full close. Auditors test these under segregation of duties, and each has a consequence a draft does not: a posted journal needs a reversal, a released payment may be unrecoverable, and a changed vendor bank account is a fraud path. Keep them behind existing human approval even where the connector allows writes.
Write a one-page scope statement listing those exclusions, the data Claude may read and the user population, and treat any change as a new approval; the Enterprise AI Governance Framework and Template guide gives a format. Then pilot with reference answers. Take the last closed quarter and write 30 to 50 questions across the use cases above, such as the driver behind a named variance. Record each reference answer and who confirmed it.
Decide the pass mark in advance, score each answer against its reference, and rerun the set whenever the model, connector or policy library changes. Track accuracy, time from first draft to approved output, and the share of exceptions escalated to a person. When the pilot holds for one close, widen the user population before the scope. dotSolved implements Claude, MCP servers and Nexatron for finance teams; Book a Demo and bring your close calendar.
